QB Mark Venegoni passed for 1,629 yards and 15 TDs and rushed for 782 and 17 but missed the championship game with an injury. They routed eventual 5A champion Joliet Catholic 41-14 in a Week 9 showdown before outscoring their 6A competition 233-85 in the playoffs. Why the Corsairs were great: They rushed for 4,196 yards behind "The Great Wall of Carmel," an offensive line led by Dan Osterhout (6-2, 280), Drew Cairo-Gross (6-3, 295) and Luke Krombach (6-4, 255). Playoff victory margin: 29.6 (Notre Dame 42-18, Crystal Lake South 55-7, Rockford Boylan 42-14, Minooka 40-20, Bloomington 54-26). The defense was led by brother LBs Gus (eight sacks) and Jon (seven) Olofsson. QB Anthony Kropp passed for 3,010 yards and 31 TDs. They finished by knocking off undefeated Wheaton South in the semifinals and Maine South, which was making its third straight trip to the finals, in one of the state's best championship games ever. Why the Griffins were great: After dominating an independent schedule of teams that went a combined 91-60, they ran through a gauntlet of top programs in the playoffs in the school's fifth year. Playoff victory margin: 17.2 (Thornton 38-21, Lincoln-Way Central 39-9, Brother Rice 32-6, Wheaton Warrenville South 14-7, Maine South 30-24 2OT). In 2009 they ran through 8A undefeated again and finished ranked No. They outscored opponents 630-170, including 195-63 in the playoffs, and finished No. Other stars included WR/S Joey Orlando, lineman Zach Timm and LBs Corby Ryan and Nick Catino. Goro passed for 3,171 yards with 38 TDs, and Perez rushed for 1,145 and 22. Why the Hawks were great: They won the first of their three straight 8A titles behind QB Charlie Goro, the Tribune's 2008 player of the year, and RB Matt Perez, who earned the honor in 2009. Playoff victory margin: 26.4 points (Stevenson 63-29, Loyola 26-7, Barrington 42-0, Bartlett 23-6, Hinsdale Central 41-21). They outscored their opponents 590-117, including 202-44 in the playoffs, and the finished No. Future Illinois QB Reilly O'Toole passed for 3,187 yards and 42 TDs, and RB Matt Rogers rushed for 1,269 behind a line that included Kansas-bound Luke Luhrsen. They topped 40 points 11 times and allowed seven or fewer points nine times. They didn't win by fewer than 20 points until the final, when they won their second straight 7A title and seventh overall. Why the Tigers were great: They proved their bona fides early with a 44-7 rout of eventual 8A champ Maine South in Week 2 and never stopped rolling. Playoff victory margin: 30.2 points (Benet 49-7, Wheaton North 44-0, Glenbard West 40-20, Belleville East 41-7, Lake Zurich 28-17). So dynasties like the four-peats from Joliet Catholic (1975-78), Mount Carmel (1988-91) and Providence (1994-97) get one team on the list - as do repeat powerhouses such as Maine South 2008-09 and Richards 1988-89. Those four programs probably deserve to have more than their nine combined entries here, but a list of 32 teams that includes 20 or so from the same four schools isn't quite in the spirit of this type of projects. Likewise, Providence uses all its fingers to count its state championships - and Joliet Catholic and Mount Carmel have to use some of their toes. The Flyers from the year before might finish second, and the team before that might rank third. Louis' 1985 champs probably would win a poll as the state's greatest team. We have two teams from the 2010s, five from the 2000s, five from the 1990s, five from the 1980s, seven from the 1970s, three from the 1960s, two from the '50s, and one each from the '40s, '30s and 1910s. Each era is represented as fairly as possible.

Research efforts are still ongoing about the long-term efficiency and "power density" of PEC devices, while "In-Situ Resource Utilization" (meaning using the material you can find on Moon or Mars to build those PEC machines) and the ability to work in microgravity conditions seem to be less of a problem. This article is timeless and should be accurate for any version of the game. The photoelectrochemical approach is seemingly valid, the paper concludes, even though some issues still remain. The research paper establishes the "theoretical foundations for the application of PEC devices in habitats on the Moon and Mars," exploring the feasibility of PEC machines specifically designed to produce oxygen and recycle carbon dioxide on these distant, alien lands. PEC technology is being researched here on Earth as a potential solution to global warming and its orange-tinted disasters, but it could work very well in space too. Semiconductor materials would turn electromagnetic radiation into oxygen and hydrogen, with no need for intermediate electricity production. An alternative approach suggested by Brinkert and colleagues is using photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices in place of photovoltaic electrolyzers.Ĭompared to the OGA, a PEC device would be based on a one-stage process designed to convert solar energy directly into chemical energy. The two-stage process of the OGA system (converting sunlight into electricity and then using electricity for the electrolytic process) is costly, cumbersome and prone to breakdowns, so it would become a liability in longer space missions farther from Earth. The Oxygen Generator Assembly (OGA) aboard the space station applies direct electric current to induce a non-spontaneous chemical reaction, separating oxygen molecules from hydrogen so that astronauts can actually breathe in space. Written by assistant professor at Warwick university Katharina Brinkert, the paper says that about 1.5 kW out of the 4.6 kW overall energy budget of the Environmental Control and Life Support System on the ISS is currently employed to generate oxygen through a photovoltaic-based electrolysis process. Astronauts will need something different to live on the Moon or Mars, and scientists think that photoelectrochemical devices could be the way to go. New research published by Nature explores a novel approach to the aforementioned resource problem, stating that the technology humans have used thus far to live on the International Space Station (ISS) isn't cut out for anything else but the orbiting outpost. There are many unknowns, starting with the resource problem and the need to sustain life in places where no human could survive by themselves. In context: Despite the lofty goals set by NASA and other space agencies with the Artemis program, outer space exploration and long-term human presence on the Moon and other planets still are a long way off. Today more often seen set into jewelry, where it is appreciated for it’s pure, unclouded transparency and its accessiblity compared to other gemstones. The best rock crystal has the clarity and shimmer of water, and it has been used throughout history to carve decorative objects and bowls. The word “crystal” comes from the Greek krustallos which means “ice crystal,” because they thought quartz crystals were pieces of ice that were frozen so deeply they couldn’t melt again. Image: Bangles and rings with assorted gemstones, including clear quartz crystal, by Alex and Ani.Ĭolorless quartz is called rock crystal quartz. It is tough and durable, and therefore usually accepts a brilliant polish. The name quartz stems from the German quarz, derived from the Slavic word kwardy, meaning “hard” – it is a sturdy 7 on the Moh’s scale, which puts it just behind sapphire in terms of hardness. Many of these are known by names other than quartz: citrine, amethyst, chrysoprase, onyx, chalcedony and more.Īll are silicates, the largest of all mineral groups, and composed of one part silicon and two parts oxygen. Depending on the geological factors contributing to its formation and the impurities present in the crystals, gem quality quartz can be found in more than a dozen different colors and varieties. Quartz is the chameleon of all gemstones. This is perhaps why it has often been worn in jewelry, where it can be kept close to the body, where it has the power to enhance the inner spirit as well as the outward appearance of its wearer. Wearing, carrying or meditating with a clear quartz crystal is said to open the mind and heart to higher guidance, allowing the realm of spirit to be transmitted and translated into the world of physical form. Wearing quartz crystals has been associated with balance, clarity and energy, and credited with benefiting overall health and spiritual well-being. This illusion was probably related to the fact that the crystal ball reflected a distorted image of the gazer, but the gem has been steadfastly equated with magical, mystical properties throughout the ages, right up until modern times. Quartz can act as a magnifying glass and eventually start a fire if the internal structure is just right!Ĭan I put quartz crystal in RAINWATER? Yes! Quartz crystal is hard enough to cut glass so water shouldn’t damage it.In ancient times, clear quartz, which is called rock crystal, was used to carve crystal balls, and people believed they could see into the future by gazing into them. The one and only warning about the sun is to make sure it does not reflect a beam of light onto a flammable object. Here is what you need to know about quartz crystal to keep it’s appearance and energy beautiful!Ĭan I put quartz crystal in the SUN? Yes! Since it is already clear, there is no worry of fading. There are other ways to cleanse a crystal but not all of them are safe for every crystal. The United States, Madagascar and Brazil are a few of the major producers.Ĭleansing: A few ways to cleanse a crystal energetically is by placing it on or by selenite, smudging it with sage or palo santo smoke or placing it in the moonlight. Where Quartz Crystal is Found: As the most common crystal found in the earth, quartz crystal can be found throughout the world. Because it has the ability to vibrate at a precise frequency, you will find it in watches, televisions, radios, computers, cell phones, lasers, telescopes, etc. Today, clear quartz is used in almost all technology and transmitting devices. Ancient Egyptians used clear quartz to channel the energy from the planetary system. Magicians and sorcerers alike attached quartz crystals to the end of their wands to amplify their own magic powers. Early Europeans fortune tellers used crystal balls made of clear crystal as it was thought to assist in reaching the divine and seeing the future. It is connected to the crown chakra and thought to bring light, clarity and a deeper connection to the divine.Īncient Uses: Named after the greek word for “ice”, clear quartz crystal has been used for it’s power for thousands of years. Metaphysical Properties: Known as the “Master Healer”, clear quartz is used to amplify energy, cleanse negative energy and promote clarity. Appearance: translucent and forms in clusters and points – may have natural cracks and imperfections within (bubbles within is a sure sign of a fake crystal) Use it if you just need a fast and zero-logging DNS service. There are three options you can choose from: Default server, Non-filtering server, and Family protection server. The very first step is to set up an AdGuard DNS profile. It includes several steps: Step 1: Set up a profile Transcript from WWDC 2020 How to configure it for AdGuard DNS And if you don't trust the network you're on, it can also involve sending your questions to a DNS server that you do trust. So how does encrypted DNS improve this situation? Encrypted DNS, simply put, is using encryption to protect your DNS questions and answers. If you've joined a public Wi-Fi network, your internet usage could be tracked or blocked. The other privacy concern is that you may not trust the DNS resolver on your local network. That means that other devices on the network can not only see what names you're looking up, but they can even interfere with the answers. One concern is that DNS questions and answers are usually sent over an unencrypted transport, UDP. So where does privacy come into the picture? Generally, the question is sent to a DNS server configured by your local network. When your app accesses a website, the system asks a question, a DNS query, to turn that name into a set of addresses. A little glance into how encrypted DNS works: HTTPS: encryption is better than no encryption. With encrypted DNS traffic, it's very similar to HTTP vs. They use different methods to encrypt DNS traffic but ultimately provide very similar levels of reliability. There are two supported protocols: DNS over TLS (DoT) and DNS over HTTPS (DoH). Starting this year, Apple natively supports encrypted DNS. Yesterday the world has finally seen iOS 14, which has some cool updates but we would love to mention one feature in particular:ĭNS traffic can now be encrypted, so DNS entries aren’t seen by others watching network traffic. The highest passes are more likely to be closed than those at lower elevation. And depending on how severe that weather is the closure might last a few hours or a few days. Just about any of the Sierra Nevada mountain pass roads can be closed because of winter weather. Late-winter weather in spring means that road crews have to move people and equipment off the seasonal mountain passes to keep other roads clear. These need to be broken up with explosives and removed in pieces. Sometimes huge boulders will have fallen and actually blocked the road. Severe winter weather can damage the roadways, guardrails, and other infrastructure. Getting the roads open again is more involved than just removing the snow. Depending on how much snow has fallen over winter, and what the spring weather brings, the passes may open again anytime from late April to early June. It takes several weeks to complete the job. Caltrans usually starts working to reopen the roads sometime in April. The mountain pass highways open up again in the spring. We haven’t been able to find a good source of seasonal closure dates for Sherman Pass Road. Sherman Pass, on Sherman Pass Road, is managed by Sequoia National Forest. We have not been able to find an online source for seasonal closure dates on Donner Pass Road. Our chart shows winter closures going back to November, 2010.ĭonner Pass, on Donner Pass Road, is maintained by Nevada County, California. But it disappeared during a site overhaul in the summer of 2019. This information was previously available on the Caltrans website. We publish and maintain a page that shows the seasonal winter closure and spring reopening dates for the major Sierra pass roads. It might be closed for a few days or a few weeks at a time. If the winter weather is fairly mild, Monitor Pass may not close for the entire season. Monitor Pass, on Highway 89, is lower and a bit gentler than most of the other seasonal passes. Occasionally, winter won’t arrive until early January, but that is quite unusual. That usually happens sometime between mid-November and mid-December. The passes close for the season when the first severe winter weather arrives in the Sierra. If there is snow on the road the highway might be open with chain controls. They are:Īny of the other passes may be closed temporarily during and right after a winter storm. Seven of the 22 Sierra Nevada mountain pass roads close for the winter. We’ll pass, unless there’s a snowmobile option. Imagine ice and snow, on a 20 percent downhill hairpin, with no guardrails, no cell service, and the nearest hospital is a couple of hours away. Even if you were able to drive these passes in the winter, you would probably not succeed. Ebbetts Pass and Sonora Pass both have grades that exceed 20 percent. The standard for US Interstate Highways says that the maximum grade should not exceed six percent, or seven percent if the speed limit is less than 60 miles (97 kilometers) per hour. A few haven’t changed much, other than being paved, because the tough terrain didn’t allow it. Several have been improved and re-routed multiple times to accommodate modern vehicles and travel patterns. Most of today’s mountain pass highways started out as primitive routes for wagon trains during the Gold Rush that started in 1849. The Sierra Nevada range is high and rugged. Read on to learn about road closures in the Sierra Nevada. We really hope the first time you learn about our winter Sierra mountain pass road closures isn’t on your vacation of a lifetime when you had planned to drive your rental car through Yosemite National Park in April. Sierra road conditions can change suddenly. The time from the winter solstice until the spring equinox. As a songwriter, she grew up in front of her loving audience's eyes: Her early Those Darlins songs are sass explosions pierced through with shards of insight, while later ones reveal a woman digging into herself, facing her own vulnerabilities aided by an increasingly sophisticated feminist consciousness. She loved the Carter Family and the Ronettes, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Rubber Soul. The band, which she formed as a teenager with Kelley Anderson, Nikki Kvarnes and Linwood Regensburg after receiving a hands-on education at the Southern Girls Rock Camp, lived up to the legacy Jessi embraced, of women who made unvarnished truth sparkle through the artful application of feedback and attitude. Those Darlins made three albums between 20 and became the noisy royals of the city's underground. Years later, Jessi Zazu has made more noise in Nashville than most of its rockers can even dream of. She was going to play that guitar like ringing a bell. Though she was the tiniest creature in her remarkable family of drawers, painters, players and all-around makers, Jessi knew she was destined to make a sound that was bigger than all of them. When Jessi Zazu was just a little girl, her mother Kathy says, she would wrap her fingers around the neck of a guitar and strain to play. In the YouTube video in which she announced her medical diagnosis and ensuing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Zazu shaved her hair off, saying that it was a way to "celebrate this new chapter." The original diagnosis was cervical cancer caused by papillomavirus, or HPV, which then metastasized. In December 2016, she first publicly shared her diagnosis, which had come shortly after Those Darlins disbanded at the end of 2015. Zazu's battle against cancer was widely chronicled, including in a long profile published in the weekly alternative Nashville Scene. Like her former bandmates in Those Darlins, Zazu (whose legal name was Jessi Zazu Wariner) used "Darlin" as a last name before the group broke up. She died at Centennial Hospital in Nashville while accompanied by friends and family, according to The Tennessean.Zazu and her original bandmates Nikki Kvarnes and Kelley Anderson formed Those Darlins when Zazu was still a teenager - and their heated music acted as a forceful argument that straight-ahead country wasn't the only style that Nashville had to offer. Zazu hinted at her cancer diagnosis on the song “Ain’t Afraid,” which included the words, “There’s a tumor growing on my body and I don’t know what lays in store.” After Those Darlins parted ways, Zazu spoke openly about her cancer, which became the subject of a cover story in Nashville Scene. The band announced their hiatus December 2015, performing their last show the following March.Īlso Read: Edith Windsor, Plaintiff in Same-Sex Marriage Ruling, Dies at 88 Through their career, Those Darlins became known for blending country music with indie rock, and gained a cult following after joining Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach on his U.S. It was followed by three albums: “Those Darlins” (2009), “Screws Get Loose” (2011) and “Blur The Line” (2013). Zazu, born Jessi Zazu Wariner, formed Those Darlins with Nikki Kvarnes and Kelley Anderson and released their debut EP, “Wild One,” in 2008. To understand how so many types of pasta emerged, you first have to understand the climate, geography, and economics of Italy. So each ‘region’ had their different styles.” “They were thinking of themselves as 20 different countries. “In Italy there were 20 different regions, but they weren’t unified ,” Segan explains. The latter is believable considering each shape and style is deeply entrenched in the region it’s made. Some sources put the number around 350 others say it’s closer to an astonishing 600, with new ones being invented all the time. Today, there is some debate surrounding exactly how many types of pasta exist in Italy. They would press your family seal, or your coat of arms, or initials into the little circle of pasta.” How many types of pasta are there? “Then, in the Middle Ages, they would take a cookie cutter and make little circles. “The ancient Romans ate pasta similar to pappardelle with beans,” Francine Segan, a food historian who specializes in documenting the evolution of Italian food, tells me. No matter how noodles arrived in Mediterranean countries, there’s no question that the Italians were making, and perfecting, pasta as far back as 800 CE - at least 500 years before Marco Polo left China - with a set of simple, inexpensive ingredients: flour and water (and an egg for most fresh pastas), the same tried and true ingredients that are used today. What tools will complement the technical skills of project managers?ĥ tools every technical project manager needs This is incredibly important when negotiating and communicating with department heads on larger projects involving several teams. Collaborating with department heads to achieve a common goal: Technical PMs need to have more than just a technical skillset like software engineering they also need to have excellent people skills. These might be investors, shareholders, the company board and CEO, or in the case of project management and IT development first, the company’s client. Communicating with all stakeholders: Although the technical project manager ‘manages’ a project, there are typically a number of stakeholders who have a vested interest in the project’s success.Managing the budget: Financial management is a large part of the technical project management role, with budgets that are typically finite and require constant adjustment as project requirements shift or unexpected costs develop.Execution of project phases: Although the technical project manager may not be involved in the day-to-day completion of tasks, they will be actively involved in monitoring and executing the overarching phases of the project.Part of their job is to allocate tasks and resources among team members, some of which are likely to be team leaders, managers, or technical teams. Scheduling and designation of project tasks: Technical PMs generally have fairly large teams, working on different areas of a project.Planning: Once the project outcomes have been set out and agreed upon, a technical project manager will need to create timelines, determine the required resources, assemble a project team, identify potential risks, and establish project milestones.Brainstorming: A technical PM is likely to be involved right from the beginning of a project, where the details of the deliveries are still being worked out amongst technical personnel.Technical project managers have fairly diverse roles, with workdays involving a combination of the following tasks: What does a technical project manager do? A high level of analysis and problem-solving skills.Experience in coaching and mentoring employees and emerging talent.A professional or agile project management certification.A master’s degree in the relevant field, or in project management. Though the job description will vary, technical project managers typically possess years of experience and at least some of the following qualifications: With this combination, they can optimize resource management, project planning, and delivery. The technical project manager needs to have significant technical expertise you might find in regular technical team meetings that matches up with the communication skills and insight of a talented project manager. Technical project managers are important, particularly for complex IT or engineering projects, where a true subject matter expert is required to guide a project to completion and provide support for project team members. A technical project manager or tech PM is a project manager with specific and significant expertise in the technological aspects of a project’s management process.
